About Text Tools

FindUtils provides browser-based text tools for case conversion, word counting, diff checking, whitespace cleanup, citation generation, readability analysis, and more. Count words and characters in real time. Convert between uppercase, lowercase, title case, and camelCase. Compare two texts side by side with the diff checker. Generate reference-list citations in APA, MLA, Chicago, and Harvard for books, websites, and journal articles. Analyze readability with the Flesch-Kincaid, Gunning Fog, and Coleman-Liau formulas. The text you paste is processed in your browser. FindUtils.com is not the GNU findutils package.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can these tools handle large text documents?

Yes. Since all FindUtils text tools run entirely in your browser using client-side JavaScript, they can process documents of virtually any size that fits in your browser's available memory. Most users can comfortably process documents with tens of thousands of words, which covers typical use cases like academic papers, book manuscripts, legal documents, and code files. The word counter updates in real-time as you type or paste text, handling long documents without lag. The diff checker can compare two large documents efficiently by processing them in chunks. For extremely large files over 10MB, performance may vary depending on your device's RAM. Close other browser tabs to free up memory for processing very large documents.

What citation formats are supported?

The FindUtils citation generator supports four styles: APA 7th edition, MLA 9th edition, Chicago Manual of Style 17th edition, and Harvard referencing. It formats reference-list entries for four source types: books, websites, journal articles, and other articles. You enter the source details by hand: authors, title, year, publisher or website name, volume and pages, URL, and access date. The tool does not read metadata from a URL, and it does not produce in-text citations. Each entry is generated with the author order, italics, and punctuation of the selected style. Copy each citation and paste it into your bibliography or works cited page. IEEE and Vancouver are not supported.

How does the readability calculator work?

The FindUtils readability calculator analyzes your text using multiple established readability formulas simultaneously. It computes the Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level, which estimates the U.S. school grade level needed to understand the text. The Flesch Reading Ease score rates text on a 0-100 scale where higher scores indicate easier readability. The Gunning Fog Index estimates years of formal education needed. The Coleman-Liau Index uses character counts instead of syllable counts for more consistent results. The tool also calculates the Automated Readability Index (ARI) and SMOG Grade. Each score is displayed with an interpretation explaining what the score means in practical terms, along with suggestions for improving readability.

Is my text data kept private?

Yes, for the text itself. Every FindUtils text tool processes your content in your browser with client-side JavaScript. The tool code does not send your text, documents, or citations to a server, and nothing you paste is stored in a database. The pages do load analytics and ad scripts, as most websites do, so a network monitor shows requests from those scripts. They are separate from the tool code. If you handle confidential material, open the page in a private window with a content blocker. Every text tool still works without those scripts. This makes the text tools suitable for unpublished papers, legal drafts, and internal business content.
