Why use a grade calculator?

A grade calculator helps you track your academic progress throughout the semester and plan strategically for success. By entering your assignments, quizzes, and exam scores along with their weights, you can see exactly where you stand and what scores you need on remaining work to achieve your target grade. This tool empowers you to make informed decisions about where to focus your study efforts and removes the guesswork from grade planning.

FAQ

How are weighted grades calculated?
Weighted grades are calculated by multiplying each category's percentage score by its weight, then summing all weighted scores. For example, if homework is worth 20% and you scored 85% on homework, it contributes 17 points (85% × 20%) to your final grade. This process is repeated for all categories, and the weighted scores are added together to determine your overall grade.
What if my weights don't add to 100%?
The calculator will display a warning message if your category weights don't total 100%. For accurate grade calculations, you should adjust your weights to equal exactly 100%. If weights are less than 100%, it means some portion of your grade is unaccounted for, which will affect the accuracy of your projected grade and target score calculations.
Can I add multiple assignments per category?
Yes, you can add as many assignments as needed within each category by clicking the 'Add assignment' button. This allows you to track individual homework assignments, quizzes, or other graded items separately. The calculator will automatically combine all assignment scores within a category to determine that category's overall percentage before applying its weight to your final grade.
How is the projected grade calculated?
The projected grade assumes you will score 0% on any remaining weighted assignments that haven't been entered yet. This gives you a conservative estimate of your final grade. As you complete and enter more assignments, the projected grade becomes more accurate and will gradually approach your actual final grade. The difference between current and projected grade shows how much your grade could change based on future performance.
Can I calculate what I need on the final?
Absolutely! Enter your target grade (for example, 90% for an A-), and the calculator will show you exactly what percentage you need to score on all remaining weighted assignments combined to reach that goal. If the required score is over 100%, it means your target grade is no longer achievable. If it's negative, you've already exceeded your target and have some cushion for your remaining work.
